Braiding Hair Buying Guide: Types, Lengths & How Many Packs You Need

Pre-stretched vs. regular braiding hair

Pre-stretched hair is already feathered at the ends, so you skip the step of stretching and tapering by hand. It gives a natural, tapered finish and saves real time on knotless and box braids.

Regular (non-stretched) bulk hair is usually cheaper per pack and gives you more control over thickness, but you or your braider will need to stretch it first.

Fiber types

Kanekalon-style fibers are the classic choice: lightweight, easy to seal with hot water, and good at holding a style.

Many brands also make itch-reduced or 'scalp-friendly' fibers. If your scalp is sensitive, look for those labels or rinse synthetic hair in diluted apple cider vinegar before installing.

Reading color codes

1 is jet black, 1B is off-black (the most natural black for most people), 2 and 4 are dark and medium brown, 27 and 30 are honey and auburn tones, and 613 is light blonde.

A code like T1B/30 means an ombré: 1B at the root fading to 30. Codes are close across brands but not identical, so compare in store when matching an existing install.

How many packs do you need?

For medium knotless or box braids at mid-back length, most people use 6–8 packs of pre-stretched hair. Small braids or longer lengths can take 8–10+.

Twists and jumbo braids usually need fewer packs. When in doubt, buy one extra — running out halfway through an install is the worst case.

Finishing products

Edge control, braiding gel, mousse to set the braids, and a light oil or braid spray for scalp care keep an install looking fresh for weeks.
