How to Choose a Wig: Lace Fronts, Full Lace, Half Wigs & Caps Explained

A good wig should fit comfortably, suit your lifestyle and look natural at the hairline. Here's what the terms on the box actually mean.

Cap construction

Lace front wigs have a sheer lace panel at the front for a natural hairline; the rest is a sturdier cap. 13x4 or 13x6 lace means a wider, deeper lace area you can part more freely.

Half wigs (like 'Instant Up & Down' styles) clip in behind your own hairline so you leave out a little natural hair at the front — fast to put on and very breathable.

Headband and glueless wigs are designed to go on without adhesive.

Synthetic vs. human hair

Synthetic wigs hold their style out of the box, cost less and are easy to maintain, but most can't take high heat.

Human hair and human-hair blends can be heat styled and colored, and last longer with care.

Getting the fit right

Most wigs are 'average' cap size with adjustable straps. A wig cap or wig grip keeps the wig secure and protects your own hair.

Making it look natural

Pluck the hairline lightly, tint the lace to your skin tone, and use edge control or a melting spray for the lace. A little concealer or foundation at the part also helps.

Many product photos show a style in a different color than the one you buy; our product pages note when that's the case.
