Protective Style Care: Keep Braids, Twists & Wigs Fresh Longer
A protective style is only protective if you look after the hair and scalp underneath. These habits help an install last and keep your natural hair healthy.
Scalp care
Cleanse the scalp every 1–2 weeks with a diluted shampoo or a no-rinse cleanser applied with a nozzle bottle. Follow with a light oil or braid spray to soothe itching.
Moisture
Spritz with a leave-in or water-based moisturizer a few times a week, then seal with a light oil.
Nighttime
Sleep in a satin bonnet or scarf, or on a satin pillowcase, to reduce frizz and friction.
How long to keep it in
Most braids and twists are best taken down after 6–8 weeks. Leaving them longer risks matting and breakage at the roots.
Take down gently, detangle with plenty of conditioner, and give your hair a deep conditioning treatment before the next style.
